Local Animal Issues

American Wildlife Management is ready to help you with any animal control issues. We thought we would take a moment to introduce some the more common animals problems found in the Rochester area.

Woodchucks
Woodchucks are excellent diggers.  In fact some woodchuck tunnels exceed 30 feet in length.  Woodchucks have been known to cause foundation problems, but more frequently they damage smaller structures such as  Sheds, Out Building, and Wood Decks. On a less costly note, Woodchucks will regularly raid your garden and fruit trees.

Skunks
Skunks can spray as far as 16 feet and are capable of spraying as early as two weeks old. Beyond the noxious odor skunks can also destroy your lawn.  Skunks will dig up your yard in their search for grubs, a delicacy for our black and white friends.

Squirrels
It’s not only in the movies that squirrels jump from Christmas Trees.  Having a squirrel in your home is not at all uncommon.  However, you should not attempt to deal with a trapped squirrel by yourself.  They are very scared and will protect themselves.  Squirrels are a problem outside the house as well.  Squirrels will chew on just about anything and will have a field day in your garage.

Raccoons
While raccoons are very cute, they can be equally harmful.  Raccoons can become very aggressive if they are cornered or feel threatened.  Raccoons can carry rabies, but also tend to spread Roundworm through their feces.  Because of this, even if you have raccoons living around your home, you may want to consider relocating the raccoon, to rid your yard of the roundworm threat.

Opossums
Opossums are known to avoid conflict.  The saying, “Playing Possum”  comes from the fact that when an opossum feels threatened it will enter an almost comatose state and appear dead.  While this seems harmless, it can lead to humans unsafely approaching a wild animal with 50 sharp teeth.

Rats and Mice
Beyond unseen infestation, we must also consider the health concerns associated with Rats.  If you find evidence of Rat or Mice droppings you may want to consider a professional inspection.

Bats
Bats may well be the most “feared” animals we deal with.  In fact, bats are not very dangerous.  However, they are sometimes difficult to remove from homes.  It is not uncommon for bats to live in attics. When this occurs you will typically have more than one bat.  Their dropping can cause health problems for humans.
